Is it the students in out-of-home care, or is it us?

The extent to which the traumatic history of children in out-of-home care impacts their behavior varies from child to child. But trauma plays a role. For many children, it plays the defining role.

"Put your stigmas aside."

“If I could give my teachers and counselors advice, I would tell them to be understanding and to put their stigmas aside. Foster children aren’t all bad and they need help while they are going through the struggle of foster care just like any child struggling with problems with biological family.”

"Be trauma informed."

“I think first and foremost teachers need to be trauma-informed. A lot of times when foster children are acting up it’s probably because something at home isn’t going right.”
